Set Up A Kid-Friendly Reading Nook

If you want to foster a love of reading in your little ones, set up a cozy spot where they can enjoy spending time with their favorite books! Here are a few tips to create a reading nook for the littlest bibliophiles in your family.

  • Define a space.
The perfect reading nook is one that’s visible and close to the action but clearly set aside for enjoying books. Hello Fifth blogger, teacher, and mom of three Jillian Shafer set up her classroom library using the Cali play rug as a comfy way to define the reading space. In tighter spots, try the The Ruggish™ Lola Play Runner!

  • Find practical storage that works for you.
Whether it’s rolling crates, traditional bookshelves, or those IKEA spice rack wall shelves that Pinterest loves, adequate easy-to-access storage will be key to keeping your book nook tidy. Mother.ly suggests storage that lets children see the covers of their books so they can easily find their favorites.

  • Think outside the box…
...or outside the house! Design Improvised set up this breezy outdoor reading nook for warm weather.

  • Make it cozy.
Add some cushions and blankets — maybe a basket of furry friends — and hang some welcoming art on the wall to create a space that beckons little readers to come curl up with a book.

  • How have you personalized your kiddos’ reading space?

Get into the flow of kids’ yoga!

Want to help your kids learn mindfulness, concentration, and healthy habits? Yoga is the perfect activity — and you can get started right in the comfort of your own home! Here are some of our favorite resources for a kid-focused home yoga practice.

There’s a reason yoga has become so popular: It’s an accessible activity that can be enjoyed by people of any fitness level — and any age! Yoga is a great way to help kids start learning healthy habits, connect with their bodies, and learn to calm themselves when faced with challenging situations.

More and more yoga studios are starting to offer kids’ classes, but you don’t need to leave the house to introduce your little yoginis to their first poses. Take it from real-life Ruggish mom Natassja Ward. She and her three boys love to gather on their Romy play rug for a fun, kid-friendly flow.

“One of our favorite activities on our Ruggish mat is turning on Cosmic Kids Yoga on YouTube and doing yoga all together!” Natassja said. “It’s the perfect way to get kids active, it’s fun, and everyone can fit on the mat together.”

Ready to get started? We rounded up some online resources to help you easily introduce your little ones to yoga!

    • Cosmic Kids Yoga: This free YouTube channel is Natassja’s favorite, featuring fun, playful yoga and mindfulness adventures in magical worlds.
    • Gaia: If you have a subscription to the streaming yoga service ($11.99/month), be sure to check out the kids’ section, with more than a dozen fanciful practices for little yogis.
    • Poses For Kids: Your yoga session doesn’t have to be a video. Check out this guide to good introductory poses for children from Yoga Journal.
    • Kids Yoga Stories: This site features printables, games, and other resources for introducing your family to yoga.
    • Yoga With Adriene: You’ve probably done some of her YouTube yoga videos — here’s one made just for young yogis!

Keep Your Car Loving Toddler Entertained With This Super-Easy Activity

Developing hand-eye coordination and fine motor skills can be fun and easy when you get creative with a few toys on your Ruggish play rug.

Here’s a simple but stimulating game inspired by an activity shared on BusyToddler.com. (If you haven’t already bookmarked this site, be sure to check it out — it’s a treasure trove of fun things to do with your littles!)

All you need to help your little one put on their own toy parade is a bin of small toys. Cars (we love these!) or animals work really well. Then it’s as simple as encouraging your child to line up their very own parade along the “parade route.” The lines and zigzags on our map are ready-made to follow for a toy parade, but you can do this activity on any Ruggish rug — just make your own lines and shapes with washi or masking tape, then easily peel them up when playtime is over!

Want to add a twist? Try turning it into a counting game (How many toys can you line up? Can you line up ten, twenty, or more?) or organizing parades by color or kind of toy. As simple as this activity seems, you’ll be surprised how long little ones can stay entertained lining up their own parades!
